Extension for Restoration and regeneration of natural vegetation - Reed (Hau) in G.Dh. Fiyoari

Global Environment Facility (GEF) – UNDP
October 2013 – July 2015

This project was a continuation of the success of the first ‘Hau’ (reed) restoration project. With the First ‘Hau’ project resulting in an abundance of ‘Hau’ being grown, the next focus was to help teach the younger generation of Gaafu Dhaal Fiyoari weaving techniques as well as spread awareness of the information collected on the subject in various forms.

Fiyoari was a weaving island in the past, but the art form died out of the community with the import of mats. It was important to preserve the knowledge of ‘Hau’ cultivation and mat weaving. The cultivation process was documented and provided to the community as a knowledge product. A local folk story was also documented and adapted into a storybook for the younger generation to learn about the cultivation of ‘Hau’. The women of the island also learned how to make Thundukunaa (traditional mats woven from ‘Hau’) as a form of livelihood activity for the island.
