Restoration and regeneration of natural vegetation - Reed (Hau) in G.Dh. Fiyoari

Global Environment Facility (GEF) – UNDP
May 2012 – September 2013

The marshlands of the island of Fiyoari in Gaaf Dhaal atoll is traditionally significant as being the only place in the Maldives which grows a premium quality of the reed grass or ‘Hau’. This is the only quality of ‘Hau’ which is used for traditional mat weaving.

The project aims to revitalize the craft of growing and processing the ‘Hau’, which would lead to an abundance of material for the mat weaving industry, which is a primarily home-based craft. This is a traditionally female craft and would empower many women across different islands to attain economic freedom and a sense of achievement. The project also helped revive the craft, which at the start of the project had only 3 people practicing but ended with 20 people having learned the craft and its significance, both economically and as heritage.
