Piloting Alternatives to Single Use Plastic Bags

The PlasticNoonGotheh Campaign aimed to raise awareness of the harm of single use plastics and explore alternatives to everyday single use items. We hoped that by showing people an alternate way of life, it would invoke a behavior and attitude change.

 We started with 20 houses, 10 corner shops and 2 supermarkets. The results were positive, with houses reporting reduction of plastic waste. The findings of the project were shared with policy makers and are being used to inform new policies on sustainability and environmental protection. The final activity of the project is to reduce single use plastic bags by providing reward incentives through an app.

 #PlasticNoonGotheh is a project which advocates for alternatives to single use plastic bags in Male', Maldives. The project is run by MACCS funded by the GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by the UNDP. This 2 months pilot activity, ‘PlasticNoonGotheh Rewards’’, is to promote the use of reusable bags and is undertaken in partnership with Dhiraagu & STO Peoples Choice.

  • It is an app which you can use to gain points by using affiliated reusable bags to claim rewards at selected locations. The app is being launched by MACCS under the campaign ‘PlasticNoonGotheh’ funded by GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by the UNDP.

  • 1- Download the ‘PlasticNoonGotheh Rewards’ app and sign in.

    2- Turn on NFC on your phone.*

    3-Next you load your gear of choice onto the app by tapping your phone over the NFC chip in the bag.

    4- Get your bag scanned via our partners** when you shop.***

    5- Receive points for every visit.****

    6- Earn enough points to claim our partner rewards.*****

    *(If your phone does not have NFC, there will be a QR code in your ‘Account’ tab of the app that you can use to get registered. Please contact one of our staff through our ‘Contact Us’ tab to help get you registered.)

  • ‘Near Field Communications’ allows the transfer of data between devices that are a few cm apart. (Like the tap bank card or mobile pay on phones)

  • If your phone does not support NFC, there will be a QR code in your ‘Account’ tab of the app that you can get in contact with one of our staff to help set you up.

  • Gear is the reusable items affiliated with this project that are compatible with this app. For this pilot activity, we have 500 reusable bags with NFC chips.

  • You can receive a bag by contacting us directly at the channels on our ‘Contacts’ tab.

  • Rewards are decided by our partners, Dhiraagu and STO People's choice, and can be viewed on the ‘Offers’ tab of the app.

  • When you have accumulated enough points, just go to the ‘Offers’ tab and click the button to claim your rewards. Claimed Dhiraagu 2GB Data offer will be awarded and activated to eligible users in the next calendar month. STO Gift Hamper rewards will be redeemable in Store with the QR Code that will be checked at the STO People’s Choice Customer Care.

  • Yes it can! We do however recommend hand washing your bag and air drying for maximum longevity of the chip inside.

  • Please remove it from your gear on the app, so that someone may use it. (We sincerely hope you do not lose your bag, though.)

  • For the pilot phase of our project, the offers we have available are those of our project partner. Hopefully we will be able to bring you more offers in the future.

Terms & Conditions

  •  Users must use the PlasticNoonGotheh Rewards App with the affiliated bag. Points can not be claimed for any other reusable shopping bag.

  • The PlasticNoonGotheh Rewards App affiliated bag will have an NFC chip and ribbon with the NFC logo to indicate that it is compatible with the app. 

  • The chip must not be removed from the PlasticNoonGotheh Rewards App affiliated bag and used separately or in another bag. If it is found to be so, the chip in question will be deactivated and the user will not receive another bag. 

  • Points can only be claimed when the bag is used at STO People’s Choice for the duration of this pilot activity. This is subject to change in the future.

  • To gain the most accurate user data, points can only be earned once every hour.

  • Each reward will have terms and conditions set by the partner providing the reward in addition to the terms and conditions of the app.

  • The pilot phase of launching the PlasticNoonGotheh Rewards App will last 2 months, from 1st May 2022 to 30th of June 2022. Rewards currently offered can only be claimed within this time frame.

  • The Pilot Programme is limited to a maximum of 500 users.

  • Upon receiving a bag, the user is agreeing to take care of the bag and use it responsibly for the 2 month pilot period. 

  • A bag can only be associated with one user at a time. If you wish to pass it along or happen to lose your affiliated bag, please remove the bag  from your gear after reporting it to us via the channels in our ‘Contacts’ tab.

  • The Dhiraagu 2GB Data offer is exclusively for Dhiraagu customers during the Pilot period and limited to the first 500 users.

  • Eligibility for Dhiraagu 2GB Data will be met when you collect 20 points. 

  • Collected rewards (2GB) by the end of each month will be awarded and activated to the eligible Dhiraagu customers in the next calendar month. 

  • The Dhiraagu Data reward is a one-time offer for the 20 points collected per month during the Pilot period.

  • All Dhiraagu rewards will be subjected to Dhiraagu terms and conditions.

  • The STO Gift hamper offers can be claimed in the form of vouchers that can be redeemed in store at STO People’s Choice. 

  • There are 2 rewards offered by STO, MVR 100 voucher worth 50 points and MVR 500 voucher worth 200 points.

  • The STO rewards will only be offered for the duration of the pilot period, during which gift hampers are unlimited.
